Okay, Larkin fans, it’s time for a Larkin trivia question: What’s the first thing Makerians do when they are faced with a problem?
When they first started out and they were repeatedly attacked, they did it. The result of which was that, after nursing an injured but murderous enemy back to health, the powerful Renegade warrior devoted himself to protecting the Makerians for the rest of his life.
When they were looking for a place to live, they did it and found Stillwaters.
When they needed a way to kindle fires more efficiently, they did it and discovered fire stones.
When they needed a way to see in the dark, they did it and invented light sticks.
When they needed to quickly get from one part of the forest to another part, they did it and came up with whirly bugs.
When they need direction or a solution or help or wisdom or insight or healing, the Makerians always do it, and they do it continually until they get what they need. They also do it a lot more than for the reasons just listed.
So what is the first thing the Makerians do when faced with a problem? They pray! It’s the first thing we should do as well. Pray often and pray with confidence, because the Maker loves to reveal His glory in His answers to our prayers.
Now don’t misunderstand. The Maker isn’t your “sugar daddy” who’s ready to give you whatever you ask for. James said in the book of James chapter one, “You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.” [Emphasis mine.] The Maker’s promise is not for those who seek their own will first, but rather He says, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these things shall be yours as well.”
Let’s be like the Makerians and seek God’s reign first in our lives, and then “pray without ceasing.”

I am listening to Hawthorne’s adventure as I drive to and from work. Today’s chapter was about this very question. When He puts the same subject in front of me twice in one day, I know I ought to pay attention!
