How We Got Engaged:
Will and Natalie had been courting almost two years when they
got engaged on a Virginia mountainside. They knew within eight
months of courtship that they would probably marry. After Will
graduated in May 2008, their relationship became long distance.
They met up at the end of the summer, one weekend in October,
and then after Natalie graduated from PHC in December 2008.
Then Will had gone back to law school and Natalie had spent
four months in Asia. Up until this summer, they hadn’t held
hands. They needed to cover a lot of ground fast. And they did.
After three weeks, Will took Natalie to Northern Virginia, one of
Natalie’s favorite places. They spent the first part of the day at a
beautiful park in Great Falls, and then they went to Natalie’s
favorite place on the Appalachian Trail. It was raining, naturally,
but it stopped just in time for Will to sit down on a rock, pull
Natalie close, and give her his weekly appreciation letter. It was
a great letter. Then Will told Natalie he loved her for the first
time, and Natalie was so excited that she burrowed into Will’s
shoulder, which he took as a good omen. He asked Natalie to be
his wife, and she was so excited, she forgot to say yes. But Will
is not one to give up easily, so he pulled out the family heirloom
ring he had reset just for Natalie. It was about that time that
Natalie remembered to say yes, but Will practically had to drag
her off of him to get her to see the ring, which Natalie firmly
believes is the most objectively beautiful ring in the world. Will
gave Natalie one more letter telling her how much he loved her.
They hugged and prayed and laughed and finally remembered to
take pictures and rush back to town for a wonderful dinner date
at Magnolia’s!
