David had known hardship before—but nothing like this.
He and his small band of warriors had been gone for days. They returned to Ziklag exhausted, dusty, and ready to embrace their families. But as the city came into view, their anticipation turned to horror. Smoke. Ashes. Ruins. Every home burned to the ground. And worst of all—their wives and children were nowhere to be found.
The Amalekites had raided the city, looted everything, and carried off every loved one like cattle.
The wails of grief that rose from David’s men must have shaken the earth. These were seasoned fighters—men who had stood beside David through exile, danger, and war. But now, crushed by loss, they wept until they had no strength left. And in their anguish, their sorrow twisted into blame. Rage. Desperation.
They spoke openly of killing David.
Imagine the weight on David’s soul in that moment. Before this day, he was already living under a mountain of pain. He was exiled from the land God had promised him. His own king hunted him like an animal. His wife had been taken and given to another man. He had sent his aging parents to a foreign country for their safety. And he lived among the Philistines only by pretending loyalty to Israel’s sworn enemies.
Now—even his loyal companions had turned on him. His home destroyed. His wives and children taken. His men ready to stone him.
David had never been lower. Never been more alone.
And yet…
In the depths of that crushing sorrow, with every earthly support knocked out from under him, David made a stunning choice:
He strengthened himself in the Lord his God.
Not in his circumstances.
Not in his men.
Not in his own ability.
Not even in God as a distant ruler.
The Scripture is precise: David strengthened himself in the LORD his God.
That is the key.
In his darkest hour, David turned his heart to a truth deeper than his grief: God was still Lord. Sovereign over nations, kings, enemies, disasters—Lord over the past, present, and future. Lord over Ziklag. Lord over Saul. Lord over the Philistines. Lord over David’s shattered life.
And because He was Lord, nothing—not one thing—was outside His rule.
No enemy was too fierce.
No loss too great.
No circumstance too tangled for Him to redeem.
But more than that…
He was The Lord HIS God…He was DAVID’s God!
David’s Shepherd.
David’s Defender.
David’s Promise-Keeper.
David’s faithful, covenant-making, covenant-keeping God.
Though he couldn’t see it yet, David believed that this moment—this terrible scene of smoke and ashes—was not the end of the story. It couldn’t be. God had made promises to David that had not yet been fulfilled. Therefore, this chapter of sorrow was only the middle of the story.
So David rose. Strengthened in his spirit. Anchored in who God was for him.
And he pursued the second half of the story.
He and his men chased down the Amalekites.
They defeated them utterly.
They recovered every wife, every child, every possession.
They brought home abundant spoil—so much that David used it to bless the people of Judah, opening the very door through which God would soon make him king.
What began as ashes became the pathway to a throne.
And it started the moment David strengthened himself in the Lord his God.
Here is the encouragement for us today:
No matter how hopeless your situation looks…
No matter how deep your sorrow…
No matter how heavy the despair that sits on your chest…
Strengthen yourself in the Lord your God.
The end of your story is not determined by your circumstances,
your enemies,
your fears,
nor your grief.
Your story is not finished.
And the God who was faithful to David is the same God who is faithful to you,
And He ALWAYS writes the last chapters!
