Psalm 138:8 – “The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me; your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”
Sometimes I feel incredibly insignificant. The majority of things I get to do in life seem small, slight, and of no importance except to just get through the day and meet its demands. I don’t think I’m alone in that feeling. All of us have a longing for our lives to matter, but on the surface of our routine and occasionally mundane existence it’s honestly sometimes hard to find significance.
I was very encouraged when I read Psalm 138 today. The promise that ‘The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me,” confirms to me that God absolutely has one for me. Thank God, I have a purpose and He will make sure that He (not I) will fulfil it! That is amazing!
A few weeks ago, I posted a message that reminds us that we are each a thread that God weaves into His eternal tapestry. My life may not seem that important to me but to God it is critical as part of His great plan. When we say “Yes, Lord” to the little tasks and promptings God places in front of us each day, we are letting God fulfill His purpose in us and will one day prompt from Him the words, “Well done, good and faithful servant!” And I don’t know about you, but those are the words I have been waiting a lifetime to hear.
Why would God bother with my small and seemingly meaningless life? The Psalmist tells us. “Your steadfast love, O Lord, endures forever.” God gives our life purpose, and He fulfills that purpose in us because of Him, not us. He genuinely loves us with an everlasting love. He knows us. He created us just as we are, and even with our mistakes and foolish decisions, God wades through the mess and is actively in our lives. His influence is evident even in our simple daily lives if we just look for it.
May our loving Heavenly Father confirm His love for us and give us His peace and encouragement today.
