What If Your Obedience Isn’t About You?

Esther 4:14: “And who knows whether you have not come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”

As I worked through the books of Ezra, Nehemiah, and Esther, I realized how little attention I had given to their timeline. When I looked closer, I discovered that the events recorded in Esther happened roughly thirty years before the work of Ezra and Nehemiah. Even more striking, the prophet Daniel lived during this same general period. Their stories are not isolated episodes—they are threads in the same unfolding work of God.

Consider this: would Ezra and Nehemiah have received such unusual favor from the Persian kings if men and women like Daniel, Esther, and Mordecai had not already demonstrated remarkable courage, integrity, and faithfulness in those same courts? Their quiet loyalty to God may have opened doors that later generations walked through.

That realization raises a challenging question for us.

What if the faithfulness God asks of you today—however ordinary it seems—is not mainly about you? What if the choices you make, the integrity you show, and the obedience you practice are not simply meeting some daily duty or responsibility, but in the grand scheme of things is preparing the ground for something God intends to accomplish long after you are gone?

God rarely shows His people the full scope of His plans. Instead, He gives just enough light for the next step. We may only see the small, routine moments of obedience, while God is using us for a much grander plan than He has revealed to us.

Even though we may only be a single thread, in His hands we are being woven into a magnificent, eternal tapestry.

We don’t need a vision for the future. And there’s no need to be overwhelmed by the depths of God’s plans. All He asks of us is to be faithful…TODAY.

Because like Esther, you may be exactly where you are for such a time as this.
