If God Loved You Then, He Loves You Now

Romans 5: 9-10 – “Since we have now been justified by His (Christ’s) blood, how much more shall we be saved from God’s wrath through Him! For if, when we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to Him through the death of His Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through His (Christ’s) life.

Wow! What an amazing passage!

Human nature stinks. We live selfish, terrible lives and then, by God’s grace, we find salvation by trusting in Jesus Christ’s death on the cross for us. That’s awesome! Simply by trusting in Jesus to be our savior and Lord, letting Him rule over our lives, we are washed clean of our sins and made righteous before God!

That’s when our fleshly human nature sticks its ugly head into our lives. Frustratingly, we discover that even though we are now followers of Jesus, WE STILL SIN!

When we see that ugly sinful nature still working in us, we think that God is like us when a friend or family member offends us. We can’t understand how God could do so much good for us, then we sin against Him, and expect Him to not be hurt, angry, and resentful like we are. And that is the very reason why Paul wrote the above passage.

God is NOT like us! He knows we are weak and prone to sin, and as long as we live on this earth we will continue to be weak and prone to sin. That’s why He made us out of dust instead of gold or platinum.

Before we start condemning ourselves because of another mistake that we’ve made, Paul wants us to consider what God has done for us. Look at all that He did to bring us salvation.  God sacrificed His own Son to pay the price for our sins.

Paul says, in essence, ‘Think about it. If God was willing to offer up His own Son to be our sacrifice…WHEN WE WERE GOD’S ENEMIES, it doesn’t make any sense that he would give up on us or cast us aside when we make mistakes now that we are His.’

God has invested too much of His love to save us, to give up on us. He knew from the beginning that we are weak and prone to sin, and God is okay with our weakness. Salvation is not because of who we are. It’s because of who He is—AND HE IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!
