Proverbs 25:28 – “A man without self-control is like a city broken into and left without walls.”
If I’m honest, self-control is one of the most difficult things to maintain in my life. As fallen people living in a fallen world, we constantly battle selfish desires, unhealthy habits, and temptations that pull us away from God. Left to ourselves, we often choose what feels good in the moment rather than what is best in the long run.
Solomon compares a person without self-control to a city whose protective walls have been torn down. In ancient times, a city without walls was vulnerable to every enemy attack. In the same way, when we try to live in our own strength, we leave ourselves exposed to temptations that can damage our relationships, weaken our testimony, and rob us of God’s best for our lives.
The natural response is to ask, “If I struggle with self-control, how can I possibly develop it?” The answer is not found in trying harder. It is found in trusting God more.
The apostle Paul understood this struggle when he cried out, “Oh, wretched man that I am! Who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” Then he immediately answered his own question: “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord!” (Romans 7:24-25).
God never intended us to win these battles alone. Sometimes He allows us to reach the end of our own strength so that we will learn to depend on His. When we recognize an area where we continually fail, it is often God’s invitation to stop relying on ourselves and start relying on Him.
Jesus possesses all the wisdom, strength, and self-control we lack. As we trust Him daily, seek His help in prayer, and depend on the power of His Spirit, He begins to build the protective walls in our lives that we could never build on our own.
The good news is that your victory does not depend on the strength of your willpower. It depends on the faithfulness of your Savior. Trust Him. He is more than able to provide what you cannot produce yourself.
